"Dreamcatcher" (Hangul: 드림캐쳐; deurimkaechyeo; Kanji: ドリームキャッチャー; dorīmukyatchā) is a South Korean girl group under Dreamcatcher Company.

The group is consisting of seven members, JiU, SuA, Siyeon, Handong, Yoohyeon, Dami and Gahyeon, they debuted on January 13th, 2017 with the Single Album "Nightmare" and its title track, "Chase Me".

Dreamcatcher was originally formed under the name "MINX", consisting of five members: JiU, SuA, Siyeon, Yoohyeon, and Dami. They debuted on September 18, 2014 with the single album "Why Did You Come to My Home?". Later on the group made a comeback in July 2015, with the Mini Album "Love Shake", which was their last release as MINX. In November 2016, the company announced the group will be disband and re-debut under the new name "Dreamcatcher" with the addition of two new members, Handong and Gahyeon.

Name and Etymology[]

A Dream Catcher is an artifact used in some Native American and First Nations cultures, it's main structure consists of a handmade willow hoop with threads net that resembles a spider's web. It may also be decorated with sacred items such as certain feathers, ribbons or beads.

The primary use of a Dream Catcher is of a protective charm, as it is said to ward off nightmares if it's hung near a bed before going to sleep.

In Dreamcatcher's story and lore each member represente a different nightmare or fear in dreams [1], it is also implies that not even a Dream Catcher can save you or protect you from them.

History[]

MINX (2014-2016)[]

On September 15, 2014, Happyface Entertainment announced the debut of a new girl group, named MINX. Before this on August 9, 2014 Happyface had teased the debut of MINX at Oak Valley Summertime Festival [2], where they performed unreleased songs that would later be part of their debut discography. A few days later on September 18, 2015 the group made their official debut with the digital single "Why Did You Come to My Home?".

On July 2, 2015, MINX released their first EP "Love Shake", along with the title track of the same name. After this the group would go on long hiatus to be, on November 29, 2016, by Happyface Entertainment announced that MINX would disband and re-debut under the new name of "Dreamcatcher" with a complete new concept and with the addition of two new members: Handong and Gahyeon, making the group seven members instead of five. 2016-2017: Dreamcatcher, first comeback, Prequel and first world tour[]

On November 30, 2016 prior to the debut announcement, the offical Twitter account of Dreamcatcher would revels the concept photos of the members, with two versions: DAY.Ver [4] and NIGHT.ver [5]

On December 18, 2016 Dreamcather would post the official schedule for their debut album "Nightmare". [6]. Members debut teasers would be revealed in order: JiU [7] Siyeon [8], Handong [9], Dami [10], Yoohyeon [11], SuA [12] and Gahyeon [13], following by the tracklist and a small preview uploaded on YouTube [14]

On January 13, 2017, Dreamcatcher officially debuted with their first single album "Nightmare" and its title track "Chase Me". starting officially the Nightmare Series.

On March 17, a mysterious teaser photo posted on the group's social media accounts hinted at a possible first comeback on April 5. Individual teasers of all seven members posted on March 19 confirmed plans for a first comeback. Dreamcatcher made their first comeback on April 5 with their second single album called "Nightmare · Fall Asleep in the Mirror" and its title track "Good Night".

On July 7, a teaser scheduler posted on the group's social media accounts announced the release of their first mini album, called Prequel. The mini album, along with its title track "Fly High", was released on July 27.

On August 1, Happyface Entertainment announced that following the conclusion of promotions for Prequel, Dreamcatcher would embark on their very first tour around the world visiting cities in Japan, South America, and Europe. The world tour, titled Dreamcatcher 1st Tour "Fly High", lasted from September 30, 2017 to February 25, 2018.

2018: Escape the Era, Alone In The City, Japanese debut[]

On January 4, 2018, Happyface Entertainment announced Dreamcatcher would be releasing a special digital single in celebration of their first anniversary since their debut. "Full Moon", was released on January 12 alongside a promotional music video.

On March 10, the group posted a video announcing their official fandom name to be "InSomnia". The name is derived from the Latin word 'Somnium' and its plural form 'Somnia', which means "dream" or "fantasy". The name represents how Dreamcatcher and their fans will be together forever, making lots of happy memories even when dreaming.

On April 24, a mysterious teaser image posted on the group's Instagram page hinted at the group's comeback album finally being released. A release scheduler posted on April 27 revealed that the group's second mini album, Nightmare · Escape the ERA, would be released on May 10. On this day, the mini album, along with its title track "You and I", was released. With the mini album's release, Dreamcatcher concluded their Nightmare Series.

From July 27 to August 5, Dreamcatcher embarked on their second world tour: Welcome to the Dream World Latin America Tour. The tour featured 8 shows (One in Taipei and seven throughout Latin America).

On September 2, a mysterious teaser image posted on the group's Instagram page hinted at an upcoming comeback. A release scheduler posted on September 6 announced that the group's third mini album, Alone In The City, was set to be released on September 20. On this day, the mini-album, along with its title track "What", was released.

The group made their Japanese debut on November 21 under Pony Canyon with their first single "What (Japanese Ver.)".

2019: The End of Nightmare, The Beginning of the End, Raid of Dream[]

On January 8, 2019, Happyface Entertainment announced that likewise to the group's first debut anniversary, Dreamcatcher would be releasing a special digital single to celebrate their second anniversary since debut. The digital single, titled "Over the Sky", was released on January 16.

Dreamcatcher released their fourth mini album, titled The End of Nightmare, on February 13 with "PIRI" serving as the album's title track. During the album's showcase on the same day, member JiU revealed that Happyface Entertainment had changed its name to Dreamcatcher Company to show support for the group and create an other division for the brother's group D1CE.

On March 23, the group released their second Japanese single "Piri~Fue wo fuke~ -Japanese ver.-".

From March 20 to December 15, the group embarked on their third world tour, titled Dreamcatcher Concert "Invitation From Nightmare City". The tour visited cities in Asia, Europe, Australia, and the United States. Member Handong was unable to participate in the tour's European and American legs due to scheduling conflicts and activities in China with the reality show "Youth With You 2".

On June 30, Dreamcatcher revealed their official colors: Pantone Black 6 C, Pantone 7623 C, and Pantone P 10-6 C.

The group's first Japanese digital single, "You and I -Japanese ver.-" was released on August 30. The single acted as a pre-release track for their first full-length Japanese album The Beginning of the End, which was released on September 11 and the tittle track "Breaking Out".

Dreamcatcher released their first special album, Raid of Dream, on September 18. The album was made in collaboration with the mobile game King's Raid; it's title track "Deja Vu" was used as the game's theme song[15].

2020: 1st full Album, Dystopia: Lose Myself, No More and 1st Opening[]

On February 1, 2020, a mysterious teaser image posted onto the group's social media accounts hinted at a upcoming comeback. A teaser scheduler posted two days later announced the release of Dreamcatcher's first full-length Korean album. The next day, a notice posted on the group's official fancafe announced that Handong would be unable to participate in the album's promotions due to her schedules in China for her participation in Youth With You 2.

On February 18, Dreamcatcher's first full-length Korean album, Dystopia: The Tree Of Language, was released. With the album's release, the group announced their new Dystopia storyline and the new triology of Dreamcatcher.

The group released their third Japanese single, "Endless Night", on March 11 but promotions for the single were suspended due to the pandemic of Covid 19.

On May 1, Dreamcatcher collaborated with boy group IN2IT and soloist AleXa for the song "Be the Future". Produced in partnership with Millenasia Project and Varkey Foundation, the song conveys the message of how important education and safety are during the COVID-19 pandemic[16].

Dreamcatcher's second video game OST, "R.o.S.e Blue" was released on July 15. The song was used as the title track for the mobile game Girl Cafe Gun.

On July 30, the group released the teaser scheduler for their fifth mini album, again with only 6 members, titled Dystopia: Lose Myself. The mini album, along with its title track "BOCA", was released on August 17.

On November 20, the group's fifth Japanese single, "No More", was released. "Eclipse (TV Size)" was released on December 25, 2020. It is the opening theme song for the anime television series King's Raid: Successors of the Will.

2021: Dystopia: Road to Utopia, "Eclipse", "Summer Holiday"[]

On January 8, 2021, the group released a mysterious teaser image on their Instagram page, hinting at a comeback later in the month. A scheduler posted on the group's social accounts on January 11 confirmed the group will comeback with their sixth mini album, Dystopia: Road to Utopia, on January 26. On this day, the mini album, as well as its title track "Odd Eye", was released.

Dreamcatcher's sixth Japanese single, "Eclipse", was released on March 24. The title song was used as the opening theme for the second part of the King's Raid Ishi wo Tsugu Monotachi anime[17].

DREAMCATCHER Korea office DREAMCATCHER COMPANY and Pony Canyon Co., Ltd. have decided to terminate the management contract for DREAMCATCHER's activities in Japan on August 31, 2021.

Dami and Siyeon released an OST for the drama Black Hole in two versions, the original version debuted at number 1 on K-OSTs chart and on number 5 on the Rock charts.

On July 1, Dreamcatcher announced their management contract with Pony Canyon will end on August 31, 2021.

On July 12, Xportsnews reported that Dreamcatcher would be making a comeback at the end of the month. Following reports, a source from the group’s agency Dreamcatcher Company confirmed, “Dreamcatcher is preparing to release a new album with a goal of making a comeback at the end of July.” The group will be returning on July 30 at 6 p.m. KST with their second special mini album “Summer Holiday.”

This is Dreamcatcher’s first comeback in six months after concluding their “Dystopia” album series with “Dystopia: Road to Utopia” in January. On July 30 at 6 p.m. KST, the girl group released their special mini album “Summer Holiday” along with the music video for the title track.

2022: Apocalypse: Save us, 1st win, Apocalypse: Follow us[]

On February 22, 2022, it was announced that Dreamcatcher would be making their return with their second full-length album in April. On March 25, a comeback scheduler was posted which revealed that the group will be releasing their second full length album, Apocalypse: Save us, on April 12.

On April 20, the group earned their first music show win of their career with "MAISON" on MBC M's Show Champion.[18] On April 26th, Dreamcatcher earned their 2ndo music show win with "MAISON" on SBS The Show[19].

On September 1, it was announced that Dreamcatcher would make a comeback in October. The group dropped their first teaser on September 21. On September 26, a comeback scheduler was posted which revealed that the group will be releasing their seventh mini album, Apocalypse : Follow Us, on October 11.

On November 16, all members have signed contract extension with Dreamcatcher Company.

2023: "Reason", Apocalypse : From Us[]

On January 9, Dreamcatcher posted a special mystery code teaser, hinting at an upcoming release. On January 11, it was confirmed the group would be releasing a special digital single, "REASON", on the 13th.

On March 31, it was announced that Dreamcatcher will be releasing the final installment of their "Apocalypse" trilogy in May. On May 1, Dreamcatcher unveiled their first Mystery Code teaser. On May 3, a comeback scheduler was posted which revealed that the group will be releasing their eighth mini album, "Apocalypse : From Us", on May 24, 2023 along its title track "BONVOYAGE".

On September 14, 2023 without any prior announcement, Dreamcatcher released the digital single "BONVOYAGE (Farewell Ver.)" which is an english adaptation of their previous release.

On October 20, 2023, Dreamcatcher Twitter account reposted a video from an user called @ymenehcra99, [20] in which a person whose name was shown as "👑" sent 2 messages "aim caorwn" and "66666683", hinting at a possible comeback with ARG. The account @ymenehcra99 was created in September 2023, and started posting on October 12 of the same year, among the cryptic posts and images, one is a letter with instructions. [21]

Fans also found out that there is a youtube channel with the same name, which has a profile picture of a crown that bears some resemblance to Celly's face.[22]

  • Each member represents a fear or phobia in nightmares:
  • The reformed Dreamcatcher made the debut on January 13, 2017, which was a Black Friday.
  • Dreamcatcher is known for being more popular internationally than in Korea.[24]
  • Dreamcatcher became the first K-Pop girl group to reach #1 on Billboard's Next Big Sound Chart.
  • The group has been dubbed "the dark 7-member version of GFRIEND"[25]
  • Dreamcatcher's base genre is rock, even though they never actually showed themselves in a band setting.
  • Because they were on Hatching Out VLive, they initially addressed their fans "Eggies", and as a rule for future VLives: They can only address each other with the sufix -egg. As Gahyeon was unable to win any challenges, she kept the costume on for the group's Dorm tour and every DreamTV VLive for 3 weeks.
  • When Stage Name Line (JiU, SuA, Dami) got their stage names, Managers told all members to refer to each other by their stage name.

  • In 2022, Dreamcatcher became the first K-pop artist to perform in the Primavera Sound Festival's history. They performed in Barcelona, Spain. The connecting flight from Frankfurt, Germany to Barcelona was cancelled, so the organizers hired a private chartered flight to send them to Barcelona. They were unable to perform in 2023 in due to Apocalypse : From Us promotions.
  • Dreamcatcher has come to be known as "The Face of Rock in K-pop" [26] and their music has been praised for its distinctive sound with elements of rock and metal. The group has developed a stronger international rather than domestic popularity and a reputation for touring overseas often.
  • In 2023, Bon Voyage gained two first place trophies, which was the first two wins after all members completed contract extensions.
